The following table is a summary of basic data on the United States economy for each year beginning with 1913.  It
has been designed for maximum flexibility - a compromise between having a large table of raw data that can
appear to be overly intimidating to many while containing lots of useful information for many others.  The specific
information that is included has been selected to benefit for as many people as possible.  Only the "big picture"
information is included in order to minimize the intimidation factor of raw data.  More information could have been
included that would benefit serious students; but that would have cut down on the number of people who would
be interested in looking at this information in the first place.

The year 1913 has been chosen as the beginning date for this data for the following three reasons:
(1) 1913 is the first year of the Federal Reserve System.
(2) 1913 is the year that the 16th amendment to the Constitution was ratified, creating the modern income tax.
(3) Much of the data for categories used in this table had not been compiled prior to 1913.

"N/A" in the table indicates data that is not available.

This information can be used to back up specific arguments for or against specific policies.  This would be a way to use the actual historical
record as a basis for a political position instead of relying on rhetoric or misinformation.

The green shading in the 'Recession' column roughly corresponds to periods of economic growth; the pink shading roughly corresponds to
recessions. For more details on all recessions in U.S. history, see the companion page
"List of Recessions in United States History".
A negative sign in the deficit column represents a surplus; a negative sign in the inflation column represents deflation.
